For twenty years, the goal was simple: rank on the first page of Google. That goal is quietly becoming obsolete. The new question your future clients are asking is not “what shows up when I search,” but “what does the AI tell me to do.”
Something changed in how people find a business, and most firms have not noticed yet. Roughly 37% of consumers now start a search with an AI tool rather than a traditional search engine, up from under 10% of interactions in 2023. ChatGPT crossed a billion monthly users in 2026, and Google’s AI Overviews now reach about 2.5 billion people a month. When someone asks “who is the best estate planning attorney near me” or “which accountant should I use for a small practice,” they increasingly get one confident answer, not ten blue links to compare.
That shift rewrites the rules. If the AI names three firms in its answer and you are not one of them, you were not beaten on price or reputation. You were simply left out of the conversation before it started. This is the problem AI Optimization exists to solve.
Three letters worth knowing: AEO, GEO, AIO
The jargon around AI search is multiplying fast, but it comes down to three ideas that are easy to hold in your head.
AEO: Answer Engine Optimization
This is about being the source that answer engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity pull from when they respond. When those tools compose an answer, they cite a handful of businesses and pages they trust. AEO is the work of earning those citations.
GEO: Generative Engine Optimization
This is the same idea applied to Google’s AI Overviews, the AI-written summary that now sits above the traditional results. GEO is how you get your firm quoted or linked inside that summary rather than buried under it.
AIO: AI Optimization
AIO is the umbrella term for all of it. It is the discipline of making your business the one AI systems understand, trust, and recommend, across every engine your clients use.
The businesses AI recommends are not the loudest or the cheapest. They are the ones the machine can understand clearly and verify confidently.
Why this is not a rebrand of SEO
Here is the reassuring part, and the part that trips people up. Much of what makes AI recommend you is built on signals you may already care about: an accurate and complete Google Business Profile, consistent information about who you are and what you do, genuine client reviews, and clear, well-structured pages that answer real questions.
The difference is the audience. Traditional SEO was written for a human who would scan a page and decide. AIO is written so a machine can extract a fact, trust its source, and repeat it as a recommendation. A human forgives a vague “we offer a range of services.” An AI, asked to name a specialist, will skip you for the firm that stated plainly what it does, where, and for whom.
What actually earns the recommendation
Across engines, the same signals keep surfacing. If you want to be the answer, this is where the work lives:
- A precise digital identity. Your name, category, location, and services should be stated the same way everywhere an AI might look. Contradictions make a machine hesitate, and hesitation costs you the citation.
- Structured answers to real questions. The questions your clients actually ask, answered directly on your site in plain language, are the raw material AI pulls from.
- Verifiable trust. Reviews, credentials, and consistent mentions across the web tell an AI you are real and reputable, not a name it should gamble on.
- Machine-readable structure. The behind-the-scenes markup that labels who you are and what a page is about. Invisible to visitors, decisive to engines.
The honest timeline
Anyone promising you the top spot in an AI answer by next week is selling something. Building the trust signals that AI engines reward is a compounding effect, and the industry norm is three to six months to see meaningful movement. The firms that start now are simply buying that head start before their competitors realize the ground has shifted.
The good news: because so few businesses are optimizing for this yet, the window is wide open. Being early to AI visibility in your market is a genuine advantage, and it will not stay available forever.
