Basic Setup for META Ads – Intro

Running Facebook and Instagram ads for a store is mostly plumbing. Get the tracking and the product feed set up correctly, and the ads themselves become the easy part. Here is the whole setup, start to finish.

The tracking foundation

Start with Google Tag Manager. It lets you add tracking to your site without ever touching the code, and it becomes the hub everything else connects through. From there you wire in Google Analytics 4 (the current standard, now that the old Universal Analytics has been retired) and your Meta pixel, both through Tag Manager. One clean setup, and every tool is talking to your site.

Business Manager and the pixel

Never run ads from a personal Facebook account. You need a Facebook Business Manager: a personal account sits behind it to create it, but that is all it is for. Business Manager is where you manage pages, people, and pixels. Create your pixel there and connect it to your site through Tag Manager, and you have the foundation that makes everything measurable.

The product feed and catalog ads

Now push your store’s catalog into Meta. Whether you are on Shopify or WooCommerce, the cleanest approach is a dedicated feed plugin that keeps your products syncing automatically (Facebook’s own WooCommerce plugin is weaker than it should be). Products go through a quick approval process, similar to a Google Merchant account. Once approved, you can build a Facebook Shop and an Instagram Shop and run dynamic catalog ads. These work like Google Shopping ads, and they are especially powerful for retargeting: someone who viewed a product or left it in their cart gets shown that exact product again.
