List Building Strategies: Giveaways

The fastest way to build an email and phone list is a giveaway. Offer something people genuinely want, put a simple ad behind it, and the list grows quickly and cheaply. Here is the method, start to finish.

It starts with the offer

Everything rides on the offer, so make it attractive enough that signing up is a no-brainer. A restaurant might give away a dinner for two with a bottle of wine; an online store might give away a popular product. The bigger the “wow,” the more people sign up without thinking twice. Weak offer, weak results, every time.

Run a simple lead ad

A single regional Facebook ad does the heavy lifting, usually targeted to a tight radius around a local business. The trick is to use Facebook’s native Lead Ads: the sign-up form comes prefilled with the person’s own name, email, and phone, so entering is basically one tap. That is what keeps the cost per lead remarkably low. In one restaurant campaign, leads came in at about 84 cents each, roughly 250 new signups for a couple hundred dollars of spend.

Connect it to a follow-up system

You can download your leads as a spreadsheet by hand, but the better move is to wire the lead ad straight into a CRM so new signups flow in automatically and drop into a follow-up sequence, by email or SMS. Even a simple “you’re in” text works, and a coupon (a free appetizer or glass of wine) brings the people who did not win through your door anyway. Want more reach? Turn it into a share-to-enter competition, where people earn extra entries for following you or referring friends.
