For a local business, the whole game is making the phone ring. Here is how local advertising actually works, and, just as important, what to do before you spend a single dollar on ads.
Win the map pack
When someone searches for a local service, the three results in the map pack capture the large majority of the clicks, on both mobile and desktop. Being one of those three is the goal. But you do not simply buy your way in. Google decides who appears there based on how well your website performs, how clearly your content says what you do and where, your reviews, and how active you are. Ads sit above the pack, but the pack is where local businesses really want to be.
Do the free work first
Before paying for a single ad, get the foundation right, because it is what earns those top positions. Start by listing the 20 to 50 search terms your actual customers use to find services like yours. Then work those phrases naturally into your website copy, your page titles and descriptions, your blog, your videos, and your social posts. Keep your Google Business Profile complete and accurate, and post to it regularly with updates and specials. It is free, badly underused, and one of the strongest signals Google has that you are the authority in your space.
Then add paid ads
Once the foundation is solid, paid traffic amplifies it. For local intent, Google Ads is usually the best first bet, since that is where people search when they are ready to act. Depending on your business, Facebook can also bring in real customers. The point is that ads work far better on top of a strong website and profile than in place of one.
Track every call
Paid clicks are not cheap, so you have to know what is working. With call tracking, each source, your website, your Google Ads, and your Google Business Profile, gets its own phone number, so every incoming call is tied to exactly where it came from (form submissions too). Pair that with local-ranking and traffic reporting, and a steady habit of collecting reviews, and you can put your time and money only into the channels that actually produce customers.
Want your phone ringing?
We build the whole local system, from your website and Google Business Profile to paid ads and full call tracking, so you can see exactly which channels bring in customers and invest only in what works.
